The question usually arrives in one line. I have gone vegetarian, or I have gone vegan, what should I put on my phone. It sounds like a diet question and it is not, because you are not trying to land near a number by bedtime. You are doing two different jobs at once. In the aisle you are answering a yes or no about a single jar. At the end of the week you are answering something slower and quieter: did any of this actually contain vitamin B12.
Almost every food app on the shelf is a calculator, and a calculator is built for the second job only, badly, using data that was never collected for it. This page does not rank apps. Rankings go stale in a season and the right pick depends on where you personally draw the line, which is a decision no reviewer can make for you. What follows stays true longer: what a label is legally required to name, what it is allowed to hide behind a generic word, which four numbers change when animal foods leave the plate, a checklist you can run inside an app store in a few minutes, and a seven-day test you can run on whatever is already installed.
Two questions, not one
A calorie tracker is a device for approaching a number from one side. Every design decision follows from that: a daily budget, a bar that fills, a total that resets at midnight. A vegetarian or vegan day is a different shape, and it is a different shape twice over.

None of this makes a tracker useless. It means the work has moved, and the app worth keeping is the one that moved with it.
What the label must name, and what it may hide
Most confusion about vegan apps is really confusion about labels, so it is worth having the rules in front of you before you judge any software. Three of them do most of the damage.
The allergen list is short and it was never an animal list. The FDA states the current set plainly: the major food allergens are milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Four of those nine are animal foods. Beef, pork, chicken, gelatin, rennet, honey and every animal-derived additive are not on the list at all, so nothing about them is flagged in a "contains" statement.
Flavourings and colourings get to use collective names. The general rule in the ingredient regulation is that the name of an ingredient shall be a specific name and not a collective (generic) name, and then it carves out an exception for spices, flavourings, colourings and chemical preservatives. Follow that exception through and you land on the definition of the term itself: "natural flavor" means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof. Meat, seafood, poultry, eggs and dairy are inside that definition. Two words on a pack, and the source is not disclosed.
One animal ingredient is required to be named, which tells you how the rest behave. The colour additive cochineal extract is, in the regulation's own words, obtained from an extract of cochineal (Dactylopius coccus costa), an insect. Since a 2009 amendment, the label of food products containing it shall specifically declare the presence of the color additive by listing its respective common or usual name, "cochineal extract" or "carmine". That rule exists because of allergy, not because of diets: the final rule states that it responds to reports of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. And it is close to unique. If you have been wondering why carmine is the one animal ingredient that shows up in plain sight, that is why.
Two more definitions are worth knowing by heart, because they turn two common words into settled answers.
Gelatin. Federal regulation defines it directly, and the wording below is the regulation's own, repeated word slip included: "gelatin means a product that has been obtained by the partial hydrolysis of collagen derived from hides, connective tissue, and/or bone bones of cattle and swine". There is no ambiguity to resolve and no manufacturer to email.
Rennet. The regulation is equally blunt about where it comes from: rennet is the aqueous extract prepared from cleaned, frozen, salted, or dried fourth stomachs (abomasa) of calves, kids, or lambs. The same section describes chymosin preparation as a fermentation-derived alternative, which is why some cheese is acceptable to a lacto-vegetarian and some is not. The standard of identity for cheddar cheese permits rennet and/or other clotting enzymes of animal, plant, or microbial origin, and separately permits enzymes of animal, plant or microbial origin used in curing or flavour development. The pack may say "enzymes" and stop there.
Put those together and you get a table your app should behave according to.

The allergen line is not an animal-ingredient line
This is the single most common way a food app gets a vegan user in trouble, and it is a structural mistake rather than a bug. Apps inherit allergen data from product databases, and that data is built on a list of nine allergens that happens to include four animal foods. Filter on it and you get something that looks like a plant-based filter and behaves like a dairy-and-egg filter.
The gap is easy to describe. Milk, eggs, fish and Crustacean shellfish are caught, because the law requires their source to be declared. Beef, pork, lamb and chicken are not allergens, so a beef-derived ingredient sets off nothing. Gelatin is not an allergen. Rennet is not an allergen. Honey is not an allergen. Carmine must be named, but it is named as a colour, not as an allergen, so a filter reading the allergen field alone will miss it too. Animal-derived flavour constituents sit behind two permitted words and are invisible to every automated check ever written.
The four numbers that change when animal foods leave
The exclusion question is the loud one. The nutrient question is the quiet one. It shows up long after the switch, and it is the reason a tracker is worth having at all on this diet. Four numbers move, and they move for reasons that are documented rather than argued about.
Vitamin B12 does not come from plants. The Institute of Medicine's reference intake review states it without hedging: because B12 is not a component of plant foods, diets containing little or no animal food may lead to B12 deficiency. The RDA for adults is 2.4 micrograms per day. The same chapter notes that crystalline B12 appears in the diet only in foods that have been fortified with B12, such as breakfast cereals and liquid meal replacements, and it is candid about the foods vegans are most often told to rely on: accurate data are not available for some of them, certain algae included, so it is not clear what B12 content should be assumed. If your app is crediting you with B12 from a seaweed entry, it is reporting a number the reference literature declines to stand behind.
Iron changes its exchange rate. The same programme of reports works the arithmetic through in the iron chapter: the bioavailability of iron from a vegetarian diet is approximately 10 percent, rather than the 18 percent from a mixed Western diet. Hence the requirement for iron is 1.8 times higher for vegetarians. That is not a rounding error. It means an intake that fills the iron bar on a mixed diet covers a little over half of the requirement on this one, and an app that shows milligrams without knowing which diet you are on is quietly showing you the wrong finish line.
Zinc changes for the same kind of reason. The zinc chapter puts a ceiling on it: the requirement for dietary zinc may be as much as 50 percent greater for vegetarians and particularly for strict vegetarians whose major food staples are grains and legumes and whose dietary phytate:zinc molar ratio exceeds 15:1. The mechanism is phytate in grains and legumes, which is to say the mechanism is the staples of the diet.
Iodine is not a property of the food. The iodine chapter is direct about why a database cannot help you here: the iodine content in most food sources is low and can be affected by content of soil, irrigation, and fertilizers, with most foods providing 3 to 75 micrograms per serving and foods of marine origin carrying more. The adult RDA is 150 micrograms per day. The same review notes that iodised salt is mandatory in Canada and optional in the United States. No food database knows which salt is in your kitchen, which means no app can compute this number for you honestly. It can only ask.
Why your app's micronutrient screen is mostly blank
Here is the part that surprises people. The four numbers above are not missing from apps by accident or by laziness. They are missing because of what a label is required to carry and where app databases get their food data.
The Nutrition Facts regulation is specific about which vitamins and minerals must appear. The declaration shall include vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium in that order, and other vitamins and minerals may be included, or must be included only when they are added as a nutrient supplement or a claim is made about them. Vitamin B12 is not mandatory. Zinc is not mandatory. Iodine is not mandatory. Three of the four numbers that matter most on this diet are optional on the panel.
Now follow where a barcode scanner gets its data. USDA FoodData Central describes its branded database as a public-private partnership whose goal is to enhance the open sharing of nutrient data that appear on branded and private label foods and are provided by the food industry. Data that appear on the label, provided by the manufacturer. If the panel did not have to print B12, the record does not have it either.
So the daily B12 total in a tracker built on branded data is not a low number. It is an absent number displayed as a low number. The distinction matters enormously, and almost no app draws it.

The checklist: what a vegetarian or vegan app has to do
Nine things. The first four decide whether the app can answer your questions at all. The rest decide whether you are still using it next month.
- An ingredient list inside the entry. Not just calories and macros. If an app cannot show you what is in the product, it cannot help you decide anything, however good its charts are.
- A verdict you can trace. When the app says vegan, it should be able to say why: because a certifier says so, because the ingredient list contains nothing on its stop list, or because a person typed it in. A verdict with no origin is a guess wearing a badge.
- A search that knows the words. Gelatin, carmine, cochineal, rennet, whey, casein, lard, tallow, isinglass, shellac. An app that only matches the words meat and milk is checking spelling, not food.
- A wall between "no animal allergen declared" and "no animal ingredient". These are two different statements and no app should ever derive the second from the first. See the test in the box above.
- A micronutrient screen that tells zero apart from unknown. This is the single most useful feature on this diet and it is close to nonexistent. Absent B12 data and genuine absence of B12 look identical on almost every screen ever shipped, and only one of them is information.
- Somewhere to record an answer that came from a person. The manufacturer who replied about their mono- and diglycerides, the cheesemonger who checked the enzyme, the waiter who went back to the kitchen. With a date, because reformulations happen and a two-year-old answer is a rumour.
- Editable entries with a visible source. You will find wrong data. The question is whether you can correct it, and whether you can tell a verified entry from something a stranger typed in.
- A safe list you build yourself. This diet is repetitive by design: once something is checked, you buy it again. If the app has no way to keep a personal list of items already cleared, you will re-read the same label every fortnight and then stop opening the app.
- Export. CSV or anything you can open elsewhere. The list of products you have verified and the answers you collected from manufacturers is the asset you are building here, and it should outlive your interest in any one app.
Notice what is not on that list: photo recognition, streaks, coaching, a recipe feed. They can be pleasant. None of them tells you whether the sweets in your hand contain gelatin.
A seven-day test
Install one candidate, not four. Seven days, one question each day.
- Day one, your own shelf. Scan five packaged items you already own. Count how many gave you a readable ingredient list rather than only a macro panel. That number is the ceiling on everything else the app can do for you.
- Day two, the words. Search the app for gelatin, carmine, rennet and casein. If it treats them as ordinary strings with no connection to animal origin, you have learned exactly what the search is worth.
- Day three, the allergen trap. Find a product with gelatin or carmine and no declared milk, egg, fish or shellfish, and see what the vegan filter says. This is the test that separates an allergen field from an animal-ingredient check.
- Day four, the blank. Open yesterday's micronutrient screen and look for vitamin B12, zinc and iodine. Can you tell whether a low number is a low food or a missing record. If the app cannot make that distinction visible, do not trust any of those three bars again.
- Day five, the person. Log a meal somebody else cooked, including what you were told about the stock, the cheese or the fat it was fried in. If there is nowhere to put that, the app only works inside your own kitchen.
- Day six, the safe list. Try to answer one question inside the app: which products have I already checked. If that takes longer than scrolling your own memory, the app is not saving you anything.
- Day seven, exit. Export the week and open the file. Then decide: did this app answer questions before meals and flag a nutrient gap after them, or did it only describe meals afterwards. Only the first kind is worth a place on your home screen.
Red flags
- A vegan filter that returns a verdict with no explanation of where the verdict came from.
- A verdict derived from the allergen field. It cannot see meat, gelatin, rennet or honey.
- A micronutrient dashboard that shows every nutrient as a bar, with no way to tell an empty record from an empty plate.
- B12 credited from a seaweed or algae entry, presented with the same confidence as B12 from a fortified cereal.
- A photo estimate that returns a plant-based verdict on a cooked dish. A photograph cannot see the stock or the fat in the pan.
- Entries that carry macros but no ingredients, especially for sweets, sauces, dressings, soups and cheese.
- Supplements sold inside the tracker. Once the app has something to sell you, its opinion about your B12 has a second job.
- No export, and no answer about where the food data came from.
When a note on your phone is enough
If you shop in the same two shops and cook the same dozen dishes, an app is optional. Keep a note with the products you have cleared, the brands that have let you down, the manufacturer replies you have collected, and whether your salt is iodised. That is a complete system and it costs nothing.
A tool starts earning its place when the variety goes up: travel, eating out, a shared kitchen, a canteen you did not choose, or the moment a blood test raises a question about B12 or iron. What should I actually look for in a meal planning app on a vegan diet?
An ingredient list you can read inside the entry, a verdict that tells you where it came from, a search that recognises gelatin, carmine, rennet and casein as animal-derived, a micronutrient screen that can admit it has no data, and somewhere to record what a manufacturer or a waiter told you. Everything else is decoration. If an app shows only calories and macros, it cannot answer either of the two questions this diet asks.
Can I trust an app's vegan or vegetarian filter?
Only as far as it will tell you what it is reading. Many filters are built on allergen data, and in the United States that data covers nine major food allergens, of which four are animal foods: milk, eggs, fish and Crustacean shellfish. Meat, gelatin, rennet, honey and animal-derived flavourings are outside that list entirely. A product containing gelatin or carmine with no dairy or egg declared is the case that exposes the difference, and it is worth testing deliberately before you rely on any filter.
Why does "natural flavor" matter so much on a vegetarian diet?
Because the regulation that defines the term includes flavouring constituents derived from meat, seafood, poultry, eggs and dairy products, and the general requirement to use a specific rather than a collective name has an explicit exception for flavourings. So two permitted words can stand in for an animal-derived ingredient, legally, with no further disclosure. An app that scores "natural flavor" as plant-based has made a decision on your behalf that the label did not authorise.
