Setting a protein target is the easy part. Hitting it is arithmetic you have to redo three or four times a day, in a dining hall, in a supermarket aisle, at 9 pm when there is chicken in the fridge and you do not know whether you are 20 g short or already done. That is the job you are trying to hand to an app.

Most food apps were built to count calories, and protein came along as one more row in the summary. For a calorie goal that is fine: one number, one day, one direction. A protein goal behaves differently, and an app that treats it as a footnote will quietly cost you an hour a week and still leave you guessing. This article does not rank apps. It gives you the number to aim at, the questions that separate a protein-capable app from a calorie app with a protein row, and a one-week test you can run on any candidate.

Pick the number before you pick the app

An app cannot help you until you know what you are asking it for. Three published reference points cover almost everyone.

The floor. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is 0.8 g per kg of bodyweight per day, which the Food and Nutrition Board tables express as 46 g a day for adult women and 56 g a day for adult men. The RDA is set to cover the requirements of nearly all healthy people, and it is not the number most people mean when they say high protein.

The training range. The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on protein and exercise puts the sufficient range for exercising individuals at 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day, with doses of roughly 0.25 g/kg, or an absolute 20 to 40 g, ideally spread every 3 to 4 hours.

The per-meal version of the same number. Schoenfeld and Aragon translate the daily figure into meals directly: 0.4 g/kg per meal across a minimum of four meals to reach a minimum of 1.6 g/kg a day, and about 0.55 g/kg per meal if you are aiming at the top of the reported range, 2.2 g/kg a day.

Run those multipliers against your own weight and you get the two numbers your app has to display without you doing mental maths.

The table is straight multiplication of the published g/kg figures, nothing more. Sanity check: the 70 kg row lands on 56 g at the RDA multiplier, which is exactly the reference man value in the DRI table above.

Two groups should adjust the floor rather than the ceiling. Older adults are the clearest case: the PROT-AGE study group and ESPEN concluded that healthy people over 65 need 1.0 to 1.2 g of protein per kg per day, above the RDA. And if you have kidney disease or any condition that changes protein handling, the number is a clinical decision, not an app setting.

Write both numbers down before you install anything. A daily total in grams, and a per-meal minimum in grams. If an app cannot show you the second one during the day, it is not built for this goal.

Why a protein goal breaks apps built for calories

Four specific things go wrong, and each one maps to a feature you can check in five minutes.

1. The daily total hides the distribution problem. Two days can both end at 130 g and be completely different: 25, 30, 75 in three meals, versus four meals of roughly 32 g. The position stands above are written in per-meal doses for a reason. An app that only reconciles at midnight tells you about a day you can no longer fix.

2. Database quality is invisible until it is not. USDA FoodData Central, the reference most nutrition data traces back to, is not one database but several: Foundation Foods with sampling and analytical metadata, SR Legacy which was finalised in April 2018 and is no longer updated, FNDDS for survey foods, and Branded Foods, whose values come from food industry data providers. A crowd-sourced app entry may descend from any of these, or from none of them. If an entry does not say where its numbers came from, treat it as an estimate.

3. The label itself is rounded. US regulations require protein to be declared as a number of grams per serving expressed to the nearest gram, and a percent Daily Value for protein does not have to appear at all unless a protein claim is made or the product is for infants and young children. The Daily Value used for that percentage is 50 g. So a barcode scan is exactly as precise as a rounded label, and four scanned items a day can drift by a couple of grams before you have done anything wrong.

4. Package claims are a weak signal. "High protein", "rich in" and "excellent source of" have a legal meaning: 20 percent or more of the Daily Value per reference amount, which for protein means 10 g. "Good source", "contains" and "provides" mean 10 to 19 percent, so 5 to 9.5 g. Against a 30 g per-meal target, a legitimately labelled high-protein snack can still be a third of one meal. The shelf will not do your arithmetic, and neither will an app that just repeats the front of the package.

The checklist: what to look for

Nine things. The first four are non-negotiable for a protein target, the rest decide whether you are still using the app in a month.

  1. Goals in grams, not only percentages. Percent-of-calories targets move when your calories move. If you cut calories by 300 and your protein goal silently drops, the app is working against the goal you set.
  2. A per-meal view during the day. Not a pie chart at midnight. You want to see that breakfast came in at 18 g when your minimum is 28 g, while lunch can still fix it.
  3. Protein as a floor, not a ceiling. Many apps colour anything above the target red, which is correct for sugar and wrong here. Check whether going over protein is treated as failure.
  4. Portions by weight. Grams and ounces, not only "1 serving" or "1 medium". Protein targets are hit or missed on 30 g differences in portion size.
  5. Cheap repetition. High-protein eating is repetitive by nature. Copy yesterday, save a meal, reuse a recipe with per-portion macros. If logging the same breakfast takes 90 seconds on day three, you will stop by day ten.
  6. Editable entries and a visible source. You will find wrong numbers. The question is whether you can correct them, and whether you can tell a verified entry from a user-submitted one.
  7. Barcode scanning that fails gracefully. Scanners miss. What matters is what happens next: fast manual entry, or a dead end.
  8. Export. CSV or anything you can open elsewhere. Your log is the only asset you are building, and it should outlive your interest in any one app.
  9. An honest free tier. Check specifically whether setting a custom macro goal is behind the paywall. Paying is fine. Discovering on day four that the one feature you came for costs money is not.

Notice what is not on the list: photo recognition, streaks, coaching, community. They can be pleasant. None of them decides whether you hit 130 g tomorrow.

A one-week test that settles it

Install one candidate, not four. Seven days is enough, and each day tests one thing.

  1. Day 1. Setup. Enter your daily protein target in grams and your per-meal minimum. If either is impossible without a subscription, you already have your answer.
  2. Day 2. Speed. Log the same breakfast you logged yesterday and time it. Anything over 20 seconds is a habit you will not keep.
  3. Day 3. Accuracy. Pick three foods you eat often and compare the app's protein value with FoodData Central. Differences of a gram or two are normal. Differences of ten are a database problem.
  4. Day 4. Distribution. At 3 pm, try to answer one question inside the app: how many grams do I still need, and across how many meals. Count the taps.
  5. Day 5. Barcodes. Scan ten items from your own kitchen and count the misses. Then check how long a manual entry takes for one item that failed.
  6. Day 6. Exit. Export your week. If there is no export, decide now whether you are fine losing the log.
  7. Day 7. Verdict. Look at the week: did you hit the per-meal minimum on at least five days, and did logging cost less than five minutes a day. Both yes, keep it. Otherwise the next candidate.

Red flags

  • Protein shown only as a percentage of calories, with no gram target anywhere.
  • Duplicate entries for the same product with different values and no way to tell which is verified.
  • A photo estimate you cannot correct. An estimate you can edit is a shortcut, one you cannot edit is fiction in your log.
  • The macro goal itself locked behind a subscription while calorie tracking stays free.
  • No export, no offline mode, and no answer about where the food data comes from.

When you do not need an app at all

If your week is four or five repeating meals, an app is optional. Weigh your usual protein sources once, write the grams on a card or a note, and build meals from anchors: this much chicken is 40 g, this pot of Greek yogurt is 17 g, this tin of tuna is 25 g. Two anchors a meal and you are at the per-meal minimum without opening anything.

An app earns its place when variety goes up: eating out, dining halls, shared cooking, travel, or a target that moves with training. That is also when the checklist above starts to matter, because that is when a bad database and a slow logging flow actually cost you the goal.
